Marple Local History Society Trips in 2010 - 2011
Trips 2010 - 2011
The 2010 - 2011 season saw us trekking over the Pennines, into and beyond Manchester before a final trip gliding along one of our local canals aboard the narrowboat "Bell".
Most members of MLHS will be familiar with Brabyns Park with its recreational meadows, playing fields, riverside and woodland walks, car park (plus a new additional one nearer the river), children’s playground, pond and pets cemetery. Many will have bought various publications at ourmeetings and will know from these, and society talks, that the Park is named after Brabyns Hall which was a Georgian house built in 1745 by Henry Brabin around a much earlier farm house, and that the most recent incarnation of the Hall was demolished in 1952 after it had been allowed to deteriorate so much that there was no other option. Most members will be aware that they are parking their cars on the site of the hall and the playground area and the pond were part of its garden.
In our walks we often ponder about the history of the paths, narrow and wide, and old gateposts, walls, and an iron bridge. One set of features particularly attracted my attention and inspired me to do some research and write this article for the newsletter.

Amongst the burial records of St. Thomas’ Church at Mellor one man has the simple term “Cricketer” attached to his name. That man was Arthur Morton, born and brought up in Mellor, who went on to achieve a highly successful cricketing career as a Professional Derbyshire player [Mellor was formerly in that county] and latterly a First Class Umpire, officiating at the highest levels of the game.
Unfortunately, Morton’s many achievements, accomplished during an involvement with the game of over thirty years, are now largely forgotten and his grave in the churchyard ignored. However, a member of our Archive team, the author of this article, was intrigued by the rise to national fame of this local lad, has been researching his life and has contributed an article about this outstanding sportsman.

The first trip of MLHS’s 2010 season was an expedition to the delights of Sheffield on Thursday 21st October.
As is customary on these occasions, a coffee and comfort break was called after an hour or so and on this occasion it had been arranged at the Visitor Centre and factory of David Mellor Cutlery near Hathersage.

In March we went to the People's History Museum on the banks of the Irwell. No coach was involved, we were directed to find our way there by public transport. (It is always assumed we all qualify for free travel - which may not be the case.)
