John Lee born Marple Circa 1803 : Miscellaneous material.

Description

Material relating to John Lee, hand-loom weaver, born Marple circa 1803, died 1877. Diary shows him to be literate, numerate, musically trained and knowing some French - such an education would have been paid for, and not in Marple, but it's unknown by whom.

 1. Extract from detail and observations given in John's diary 1818/1822, which was written in literary and vernacular style. Chiefly concerned with chronicling the weather on an hourly/daily basis, he also penned vivid and detailed pictures of Marple life, including events of national importance, eg Reform Movement. Took part in protests of weavers and others against declining standar of living in post-Napoleaon era. Noted births, deaths, funerals, crime,  accidents, agricultural works, etc.

2. Census records relating to Lee family 1841, 1851, 1861 & 1871.

3. Maps of Marple 1837-51 , 1849, 1872 and circa 1875
