Newspaper cuttings relating to the Marple Telephone Exchange :
1930 : Report on the opening of the telephone exchange near the junction of Hollins Lane with Station Road, Marple which replaced the exchange in Willow Grove. with photograph of the two operators. At the same time the call boxes were fitted to accept coins of greater value than 1d.
1967 Feb & Mar : Two newspaper cuttings reporting on the plans for Marple's automatic telephone exchange, built to handle the growth in telephone lines from 400 in 1930 to 3,630 in 1967. The automatic exchange with no manual operating staff was housed in a new building behind the 1930s Hollins Lane exchange and introduced STD (subscriber trunk dialling) and AFN (all figured numbers).
