Title

Reports/correspondence on the condition of Lime Kilns : 1966

Description

Two reports and accompanying correspondence:
1. 28.01.66 Inspection by S Ashworth of Lime Kilns structure reporting on general condition. In it he says ‘The structure is now in imminent danger of further collapse, the extent of which cannot be predicted. In view of this it is not safe to carry out any temporary shoring without resorting to the use of highly uneconomic precautions - - - Such work would be completely beyond the scope of the money available.”
2. 22.03.66 Letter to the Clerk to the Cheshire County Council stating that following an inspection on 13 Jan the Ministry of Works and Public Buildings do not wish to delete this building from their list and asking for an inspection by a member of the Amenities Committee.
3. 08.06.66. Second inspection by S Ashworth inspection of Lime Kilns update of the previous report in which he says that he found little sign of further deterioration and that most of the defects he noted could have resulted when the vault at the east end collapsed. If so ‘there is some hope that a large part of the structure could be restored if repairs are carried out in the near future’.
4. 02.11.66 A reply to the Hon Sec of the Marple Antiquarian Society confirming that the British Legion Trustees have no intention of disposing of their club building which stands immediately above the lime kilns.
