Marple Local History Society Archives
The Society has thousands of items in its archives, which have been collected since the early 1960s and are stored at the Mellor Parish Centre, Church Road, Mellor SK6 5LX. A team of volunteers meets most Thursday mornings and is currently working on producing a comprehensive catalogue, which obviously will continue to expand as the collection increases.

A ground-breaking society
Have you ever heard of a History Society being at the forefront of technology? No? Well we think we are!
We have an excellent archive of local records, photographs, maps and artefacts but to use it you had to visit the archive in person. In 2015 we began making that valuable archive accessible to anyone with an Internet connection at their fingertips.
The Marple Local History Society Digital Archive gives free access, via our website, to thousands of documents drawn from our archives collections. It is a searchable database that is easy to use and which is continually growing. It complements our collaboration with The Marple Website, which publishes our large photographic collection via its Virtual Tour of Marple.

The origin and use of Marple Local History Society online Archives
Have you ever thought about a History Society leading the way in technology? If not, you might be surprised to learn that we believe we are doing just that!
We have a fantastic collection of local records, photographs, maps, and artefacts, but previously, accessing this archive required a visit in person. In 2015, we took a significant step by making our valuable archive available online for anyone with internet access.
The idea to create an online platform for our archive originated from our former Chairman, Hilary Atkinson. Mark Whittaker, who manages and designs our website, explored various software options to help share this rich resource with the public. He ultimately chose the Omeka software program, which is a free and open-source platform designed for showcasing collections from libraries, museums, and archives. The name Omeka, derived from Swahili, means to display or unpack items.
