Archive stories of artefacts
Stories about artefacts that have been donated to the society's archives, usually due to their links to Marple and District.
What links a frog with Sunderland and a mill in Marple?
The answer is a mug, which was given to the Society by Pat Heap whose parents had a greengrocers shop (now a beauty salon) on Hollins Lane, opposite Hollins Mill.

Miss Fanny Hudson, the owner of Brabyns Hall from 1906 to 1941, gives us an impression of stern but competent authority. She ran a large household with eight domestic servants and twice that number of estate workers and gardeners. During the First World War Brabyns was turned into a hospital and Miss Hudson then had charge of at least 30 nurses and a similar number of wounded servicemen. The few pictures we have of her reinforce that impression of a formidable lady but over the last year our opinion has been changed by Mary Moore whose family has had close connections with Miss Hudson and the Brabyns Estate since early 20th century.

Most of us possess something that’s rather old, has seen better days, but which is far too interesting to throw away. Our Archive is no exception; the Archives team has worked hard for several years classifying and filing all our various documents and maps and has now moved on to the various artefacts we have been given over the years. One of the most unusual is a musical photograph album which doubled up as a souvenir of the life of William Gladstone, the “Grand Old Man” of Victorian politics.
