Meetings 2011 - 2012
On 19 September 2011, Chris Makepeace's talk opened the season. Chris came to the Evangenical Hall on a light September evening, with members hurrying to renew or take out their first membership. As the evening grew into night, Chris talked of the solving some of the mysteries of local history research, in an effort to put in place that last piece of the jigsaw.

In October 2011, Judith Wilshaw, Stalwart of the society, gave a talk on Samuel Oldknow- Marple's favourite son. A man who changed beyond recognition the town of Marple, and who's legacy remains in and around the town.

On a cold November evening Sue Day gave a the Society an entertaining talk, despite the best efforts of badly mis-behaving technology, on 'Horseboating in the 21st. Century'. A tour de-force as Sue, treated the society to a tale of a method of working that had disappeared by the mid twentieth century.

After the food had been eaten,the non-alcoholic punch drunk, the Christmas Party folk settled down to hear an entertaining talk by Warwick Burton on Railway Pubs and Relics. An education for some, including your correspondent, as Warwick described the past life of some of the local railway pubs, and how he came about to own some railway relics. Warwick who now lives in York, had spent his childhood in Marple, and some of his exploits in those days came to light during the evening.

How does a winning smile connect from a Bailey Bridge to the largest council estate in Europe ? The evening took us back to the recent past, childhood memories of the non-mobile, non-web,world of party-line telephones and mum and dad dressing up for that 'works-do'.

Donald Reid, Society President, entertained the members, with an illuminating and amusing tale of his trips around 'Curious Cheshire'. As the lights dimmed in the hall, Don took the members on a 'Magical Mystery Tour' round Cheshire, which the members may have thought they knew, but soon learnt they didn't ! Chester racecourse, a port for Roman ships, never !

The Society were entertained in March, by the two-handed act of Ian Edgar and Don Baines illuminating the long, long haul along the road to the Restoration of Bugsworth Basin. The talk inspired several members to make a note in their diaries to visit the site, soon, if not sooner !

Following the brief, but important, AGM, Ruth Hargreaves and Ann Hearle gave an insight into the five year project to study Longhurst Lane, work undertaken by a dedicated team of volunteer researchers , to create the story of Moor End to Marple Bridge.
